DIY Composting List:

Dedicate space on the ground for your compost site

Start with sticks and grass or hay

Add moist layers of household waste

Add dry layers of household waste.

Lots of carbon: coffee filters, cornstalks, egg shells, peels, wood ash

Less nitrogen: manure, lawn clippings, leaves, food scraps

LAYER your items in moderation! (wet, dry, wet, dry)
-
Allow air flow and liquids to permeate your entire compost pile
-
Cover your compost pile; (heat retention and moist is good, soaked is NOT good)
-
Drill holes in a covered container, allow air and rain to pass through
-
Turn your compost pile every few weeks with a pitch fork
-
Let the oxygen to do its thing!
DIY Composting No No’s:

Toilet paper – Tampons - Raw and/or cooked rice - Milk products (cream, milk, yogurt) - Animal products (bones, blood, fish) - Magazine paper or heavily coated paper
